Surgeries
Dental surgery is any of a number of medical procedures which involve artificially modifying the dentition. Dental Surgery is done for various reasons in the Dental field. Some of the surgeries, which we perform, are:
v Periodontal Surgeries v Gum Surgeries v Bone Grafting v Flap Surgeries v Oral And Maxillofacial Surgeries v Fractures v Impactions (Removal Of The Wisdom Teeth) v Dental Implants
Surgical Therapy § Flap Surgery: Our periodontist separates the gum from the teeth creating a "flap" and accesses the infected pocket. It aims to reduce pocket depth and increase the ability to maintain the remnant pockets clean. § Gingivectomy: This procedure is performed when excess amounts of gum growth around the teeth have occurred. This results in false pocket formation and the inability to keep them clean. § Osseous (bone) surgery: This procedure is done to smooth shallow craters and defects in the bone due to mild or moderate bone loss. Guided Tissue Regeneration: This procedure is done in combination with a surgical flap operation where gum growth into a defect is barriered off to allow slower growing bone, cementum and ligament cells to populate a bony defect. § Bone Grafts: Tiny fragments of the patient's bone, synthetic bone or bone obtained from a bone bank are used to fill a bony defect around the teeth. These grafts act as a scaffold on or around which patients own bone is conducted or induced to grow. § Soft Tissue Graft: In cases of gum recession a graft is usually taken from the palate and transplanted onto the receding area to reinforce the thin gum and to inhibit further gum recession. Dental Implants
Dental Implants are artificial tooth roots. Holes are made into the jaw bones and the artificial roots are placed and covered over. The implants then heal and integrate with the jaw. After healing an artificial top (crown) is placed into the implant and crowns, bridges and attachments for dentures can be placed.
Implants can be used to replace individual missing teeth, but also to replace several teeth where a conventional bridge will not work. Patient with full dentures, especially lower full dentures that are more difficult to wear can benefit from implants. The implants can act as anchors to keep the denture in place in the mouth.
Unfortunately, dental implants tend to be costly. As noted above, any surgery introduces certain unavoidable risks, and these risks must be evaluated with the possible benefits of the implants.
We feel that our patients are best served by having a specialist perform the surgical portion of the procedure, either an oral surgeon or a periodontist (gum specialist). After the implant has fused to the bone, we place the crown, bridge or anchors for the full dentures.
If you have any questions about implants, please let us know.
